Did you know that older Golden Retrievers can get hematomas in their ears? Did you know that they usually require surgery? Well, I know that now.
We took Dusty in to get his ear checked last week because it was swollen and full of fluid. The cortisone shot didn’t help, so we scheduled surgery. No food or drink after 9pm, so we had to hide the water dish (and make sure the toilet bowl lids were closed). Dusty was so excited to go for a ride last Wednesday. He loves car rides and he’s the only dog I’ve ever had that loves going to the vet. He loves Dr. Warren and his staff. Every time he walks in the door, he stand up and puts his paws on the counter to greet them.
Of course, Dusty was oblivious to what was awaiting him that morning. He greeted the staff in his usual manner and they brought him to the back room, his tail wagging the entire time. I spent the day staring at the clock and waiting to hear that he was okay. They finished his surgery about noon and told me I could pick him up after 4:30pm.
At 4:31pm, I went to pick up my “Surgery Boy”. That’s been his nickname since he got home. He was a little wobbly and he slept a lot that first day, but by Thursday morning, he was ready to fetch one of the many balls that are in every room of our house.
Yesterday, we brought him in for a checkup and I brought Dr. Warren and his staff some cookies to thank them for taking such good care of our Surgery Boy!
